Everything is connected to everything else: deep time histories of hunter gatherers in the Cairngorm Mountains

Professor Graeme Warren, University College Dublin

Thursday 21st March 2024, 6pm

Lecture Theatre, Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh

This talk presents the results of a decade of ongoing research focused on Mesolithic activity in the Cairngorms, Scotland. Our work has involved the excavation of three Mesolithic sites, the development of new perspectives of landscape development, computer models predicting site location and the commission of art works to raise awareness of this distinctive and important archaeological material. Through this, we have also tried to consider how we best understand long-term and deep-time histories of the use of mountain landscapes, and how to work with the different groups who engage with mountains today.

Graeme Warren is a Professor in the School of Archaeology, University College Dublin. He is a specialist in the archaeology of hunter-gatherers, with an emphasis on the Mesolithic period in northwest Europe. He is President of the International Society for Hunter-Gatherer Research, and in 2023 hosted the 13th Conference on Hunting and Gathering Societies. He has a special interest in the archaeology of mountain landscapes, including long term landscape histories. He leads active fieldwork and research projects in Ireland and Scotland and is published widely. His most recent book is Hunter-Gatherer Ireland: making connections in an island world (Oxbow, 2023)
