Aberdeen University Win the Botanical University Challenge 2025
Congratulations to the Aberdeen students who won this year’s contest
In a close-fought final round of the Botanical University Challenge held in Cambridge in August, Aberdeen University won the trophy, beating 30 other teams. Congratulations to team members (left to right) Max Fontaine, Amy Beach, Justin Saddler, Taran Murphy, and Santiago Castano Sirosi. Teams from the Botanics and University of Edinburgh also entered – better luck to them next time.

Over 100 students from UK and Irish Universities attended the Challenge and the Student Botany Festival that ran alongside the event. BSS President Prof. Jonathan Silvertown gave the closing talk.
Next year’s final will be at the University of Reading. Let’s bring it to a Scottish University in 2027!
Details of the Botanical University Challenge can be found at their website.
BSS has financially supported the BUC in 2024 and 2025, so it is particularly gratifying to us that the trophy was won this year by a Scottish university team. BSS welcomes applications for travel grants from successful contestants at Scottish universities who want to attend the Reading event in 2026.
