Student Cyanotype Printing Workshop Results!

Two weeks ago the student sub group organised a cyanotype printing workshop at the Royal Oak, and after a long wait, the results can finally be shown! It was a lovely evening of botanical artwork as student subgroup member Sophie Hudson reports:

On the 26^th of February, the BSS student sub-group held a cyanotype printing workshop – with anyone welcome, regardless of botanical knowledge! We began in Holyrood Park, where we spent some time collecting various different plants that we wanted to use for printing, such as ferns and ivy, from around St Margaret’s Loch, before meeting up in the Royal Oak to get started on the printing. We first organised our plants on our plain white t-shirts to get an idea of how we wanted our designs to look, before removing them and using a sponge to saturate the t-shirts with cyanotype dye. We then placed our plants back on, where they blocked out any UV light would make contact with the t-shirt and react with the cyanotype dye. The results turned out stunning – and we all now have inverted prints of plants on clothes; with designs completely unique to us! A super easy, super fun experience – with a chance for some arts and crafts and plant identification experience.
