What: The Ecology Centre (KY3 9YG), which is based by Kinghorn Loch, will provide a base for a BioBlitz of the area. The loch had been heavily polluted by “red mud” leachate for about 30 years. Restoration work began in 1983, and the loch now supports a diverse range of aquatic plants, macroinvertebrates, phytoplankton and zooplankton. It is also used for water sports and as a recreational carp fishery. The BioBlitz project aims to list as many species as possible both plant and animal on the day. The Ecology Centre and Robert, who is a BSS member, welcomes BSS involvement on the day. David Chamberlain and Liz Kungu will record bryophytes, and Heather McHaffy will be recoding ferns. There is parking beside the access road to The Ecology Centre and also a smaller one outside the Centre itself that has one EV charging point, though both may be quite busy of the day.
The event will open at the Ecology Centre, Kinghorn at 9am and close at 7pm. The event organiser, Rober Mill, will be giving a talk on the Loch and marsh’s biodiversity from 12.10 till 12.50. BSS members are free to attend the talk and participate in plant recording throughout the day. Please bring a packed lunch.
