Title: The Role of Fungi in Carbon Sequestration
ABSTRACT: Fungi play a crucial role in terrestrial ecosystems through nutrient cycling, soil formation, and as symbionts with plants. But how can fungi effect the carbon balance in our environment? In certain ecosystems, the carbon stored belowground in soil, root biomass, and fungi is estimated to significantly exceed the carbon present aboveground. Neville Kilkenny explores recent studies on how fungi contribute to carbon sequestration and de-sequestration, and their significance for climate change.
Bio: Having studied mycology at The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh under the guidance of Prof. Roy Watling 18 years ago, I retain links as a Research Associate and continue to run workshops and forays for the Garden.
My clients include The James Hutton Institute, NatureScot, Natural England, and RSPB. I am a member of the British Mycological Society, The Fungus Conservation Trust, and an honorary life member of The Danish Mycological Society. Working as a freelance mycologist, with a focus on conservation and understanding the diversity and ecological needs of fungi, I am keen to share my passion for these incredible organisms and educate people about their role in ecosystems and everyday life.
